Joey Veerman made his debut in the PSV shirt on Sunday afternoon. The midfielder who came over from sc Heerenveen started in the Eredivisie game with FC Groningen (0-1 win) on the bench, but he came within the lines after more than an hour at the expense of Marco van Ginkel. Veerman himself looks back on a ‘beautiful afternoon’, while trainer Roger Schmidt is only positive about the debutant. Analyst Kenneth Perez would even give Veerman a basic place in the upcoming meeting with Ajax.

“It was great, for sure. Among other things, the training level is going up and it’s just great here,” Veerman reacts after the game in front of the camera of ESPN. “Is it getting used to? I think I can do well in training. At least that’s what I think myself. No, that’s going really well. The complex is of course very different at PSV than at Heerenveen, the level is much higher here and of course I have a few fighter jets in front,” Veerman refers to, among others, Cody Gakpo and Yorbe Vertessen. “So that’s really nice for my game. I noticed that I was ready for a new step, and fortunately PSV gave me that chance. It was a beautiful afternoon like this: this is what I have been waiting for a long time.”

At the press conference, Schmidt was asked to pass judgment on the midfielder’s performance. “It is a good transfer for us. In order for him to integrate as quickly as possible, it is important to let him play. He was unable to train for a while, but has now competed twice. He is technically good, especially on the ball. He is very creative. Today it was important to show that he can fight too and that has happened. As a central midfielder you need the whole package. PSV is a good opportunity for the next step in his development,” said the Eindhoven team’s coach.

In ‘s studio This was the weekend the analysts are also full of praise for Veerman, although Perez is more firm than his colleague Marciano Vink. “Would I put him in the starting line-up against Ajax? That is not a simple question”, says Vink. “Are you going to get Van Ginkel out for him?” Perez answers that question wholeheartedly. “Yes. The excuse that he was not in the starting line-up today was that he had only trained at full power twice. On Sunday we will be another week further and I can well imagine that you want Joey in the team,” said the analyst.
