The Dutch national team failed to perform in the first half against Turkey in the quarter finals of the European Championship and according to Pierre van Hooijdonk this is largely due to the forward line of Oranje. The former striker shows in his analysis of the NOS knowing that he thinks Memphis Depay, Cody Gakpo, Steven Bergwijn and Xavi Simons are all playing below par.

“You felt it. The initiative you had at the beginning of the match slipped out of your hands,” Van Hooijdonk explains. “Ultimately, our attackers, Bergwijn, Memphis, Gakpo and Simons, are not good enough.”

The fact that those four players are disappointing is a big problem according to the analyst. “They are your difference makersthey have to do it for you. They are incredibly sloppy.”

Should Ronald Koeman intervene? According to Rafael van der Vaart, yes. “I would make a substitution. I would bring in a real striker. I think Weghorst is more for the final phase, I would bring in one of the others, but that probably won't happen,” the former midfielder advises the national coach.

Van Hooijdonk agrees with his colleague. “I would play with a deep striker, then Memphis can play around him.”
