Willem van Hanegem has finished the social discussion about the World Cup in Qatar. The former international writes in his column in the General Newspaper that he does not consider it necessary for players or trainers to make a statement against the appalling and inhumane conditions in which workers have to prepare stadiums in the country.

“The World Cup will start in Qatar in exactly one year and we will be there. That’s nice”, opens the curve his column. “The annoying thing is that from now on all those people will not waste a moment to start talking about the situation in Qatar. National coach Louis van Gaal is really not doing everything right, but I completely agree with him when he says that it is It’s not up to him or the players to constantly shout about it.”

“Yes, I hear then: there must finally be a player who says ‘I’m not going with them’. Well, then someone else will come along, which is very important,” continues Van Hanegem. “And always that whining: ‘If a player or trainer shouts something, then it really has an impact’. I get so tired of that.” After the the Dutch squad qualified for the World Cup on Tuesday evening, Van Gaal and Georginio Wijnaldum were asked what they thought about the political controversies surrounding the World Cup in Qatar. They both declined to comment substantive. Van Gaal stated on Tuesday that there is ‘everywhere’ going on and referred to the murder of Peter R. de Vries in the Netherlands.

“Van Gaal was absolutely right in saying that things are happening all over the world that cannot bear the light of day,” says the columnist. “We always have to be the first with our protests, but when you walked through the center of Rotterdam on Friday evening, you probably didn’t have the idea that you were in a normal country, did you? Van Gaal does not have to name the situation in Qatar for that group of people who ask again and again and who will soon be the first on the plane to stay there in the sun for four weeks.”
