Rafael van der Vaart has never been asked again as an analyst at Sky Sports, after he criticized Harry Maguire in the past as an analyst at the sports channel. The former professional football player revealed this on Monday evening at Rondo. Maguire was the victim of fierce and mocking criticism on social media and in the English media for days last week.

As an analyst, Van der Vaart has regularly criticized Maguire, who, according to the the Dutch international, can’t do much about it. In August 2019, for example, Van der Vaart was a guest at the English Sky Sports and the transfer from Maguire to Manchester United was discussed. “It’s pretty funny. During the Nations League, when I was working for Dutch television, Harry Maguire was by far the worst man on the field. And then, two months later, he signed with Manchester United for €87 million. Incredible!” Jamie Redknapp then stood up for the now 29-year-old centre-back, who is still officially captain of the Red Devils is.

Bee Ziggo Sports Maguire was subsequently filleted several times by Van der Vaart. “If I go to an amateur club on Sunday, I will find three who can do this. It might be a bit of a silly thing to say, but I really mean it. We are talking about almost ninety million, then Virgil van Dijk is worth three hundred million.” In July 2020, the analyst also had few words of praise for the defender. “I think he goes home every day and says to his wife, ‘I don’t give a damn, but I make so much. They just believe me’. I really think so. He laughs at everyone.”

Van der Vaart refused his critical words about Maguire on Tuesday evening at Rondo to take back. “I saw him then in the Nations League, I thought he was bad. Then suddenly three months later it was sold for almost ninety million euros, which I thought was an idiotic amount. That’s what I said on English television, where I was a guest. After that I was never invited there again, that’s really serious. The whole of England was angry then, but I have a bit of the feeling now that everyone doesn’t like him very much.”

England drew 3-3 against Germany at Wembley last week as part of the Nations League. Maguire’s personal mistakes preceded the first two goals, after which the defender received a lot of criticism. Maguire caused a penalty kick used by Ilkay Gundogan after he himself had suffered a clumsy loss of the ball and was also at the basis of the second German goal. Again the defender of Manchester United lost the ball, after which Kai Havertz scored nicely.
