Gary Neville believes that England should play in a 5-2-3 system against Germany in the eighth finals of the European Championship. The former international thinks that the team of national coach Gareth Southgate with five defenders has a better chance of reaching the quarterfinals than in the current 4-2-3-1 formation. He reveals his favorite setup on Twitter. The fact that Jack Grealish and Phil Foden, among others, do not have a base place in Neville’s team, leads to criticism from Jack Wilshere. Edwin van der Sar also joins the discussion, albeit with a wink.

Former international Neville thinks England have a good chance against Germany if they play with five defenders. On Twitter, he reveals his favorite line-up in that formation, in which Reece James and Luke Shaw have a role as wingback. Neville would leave Grealish and Foden out of the squad, while he does make room for Bukayo Saka. The latter made a strong impression in the last group match against the Czech Republic, in which he was voted man of the match. Neville would like to see Kyle Walker, John Stones and Harry Maguire in the back three. Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice would pit the former Manchester United player against Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan.

Wilshere commented on Neville’s idea on Twitter on Thursday morning. The 34-year-old midfielder, good for 34 caps on behalf of England, does not understand that Neville does not make room for Grealish and Foden. “The most talented and creative players. At least one of the two must play!” Van der Sar notices that his former teammate of Manchester United only has ten players. “No goalkeeper?” said the general manager of Ajax. “I’d rather not”, Neville responds with a laugh.

England won Group D with seven points from three matches. The opening game with Croatia was won 1-0, after which a goalless draw against Scotland followed. In the last game, the Czech Republic was sidelined 0-1. In the quarterfinals, England is linked to Germany, which narrowly qualified on Wednesday with a 2-2 draw against Hungary. If England survive the quarterfinals, they will play against the winner of Sweden – Ukraine in the quarterfinals.
