Edwin van der Sar has decided to stop at Ajax, the team from Amsterdam confirms in a press release. The driver himself gives a text and explanation as to why he has decided to stop. Van der Sar will hand over his duties to his fellow members of the Executive Board as of 1 June 2023. The Supervisory Board (RvC) has asked him to formally stay on until August 1 to ensure a proper transfer of national and international files.

“After almost eleven years on the board, I am exhausted,” says Van der Sar. “We have experienced very nice things, but it has also been an incredibly difficult period. I am very grateful to the people I met and worked with during my second career at Ajax for what we have achieved and experienced. I now need to distance myself, relax and do other things. It doesn’t feel good to have to make decisions about the future of this beautiful club in the coming period. Hence my decision to stop now.”

Supervisory Board chairman Pier Eringa respects Van der Sar’s decision. “We wanted Edwin to stay, but his decision was made and we have to respect that. The past season is not representative of the total period of Ajax under his leadership. The club has experienced many successes, has grown enormously and has also gained international prestige. His duties will be taken over by the current management. Edwin will remain available for transfer and advice until August. We expect to be able to announce the new management composition soon after 1 August. Our ambition is to add someone with an Ajax background to the top.”

Van der Sar has been part of the Ajax management team since November 2012. There he started as director of marketing. The former goalkeeper has been general manager since November 2016. He also holds several board positions at FIFA, UEFA and ECA. Partly as a result of the sporting achievements and successes in areas such as commerce and media, the club experienced enormous growth during the period under Van der Sar. His contract ran until June 30, 2025.
