Giovanni van Bronckhorst made a big stunt with Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday. The Scots surprised friend and foe by winning 2-4 in Germany at Borussia Dortmund and have a wonderful starting position for the return in Scotland.

Erling Braut Haaland is still absent due to a groin injury, so that Donyell Malen took his now familiar place in the point of the attack at Dortmund. The Germans had the best chances in the early stages: Dan-Axel Zagadou wasted a clear header and Marco Reus saw a bet removed from the line by defender Borna Barisic. The Scots themselves struck in the final phase of the first half via corner kicks. First a ball was headed to Zagadou’s hand, after which James Tavernier opened the score with a penalty: 1-0. Shortly afterwards, a clever corner was headed towards the far post, where Alfredo Morelos was ready to give the final push: 0-2.

As if that wasn’t bad enough for Dortmund, Rangers made it 0-3 four minutes after the break. After a dribble over the left, Ryan Kent prepared for John Lundstram, who curled the ball into the far corner from sixteen meters: 0-3. Dortmund did something back within two minutes via Jude Bellingham, who also shot beautifully from the edge of the penalty area: 1-3. BVB believed in it again, but got the next sledgehammer three minutes later. Morelos broke through on the left and saw his wide pass being walked in by Dortmund defender Zagadou: 1-4. Eight minutes before the end, Raphaël Guerreiro eased the pain for the home team by shooting the ball beautifully from a distance: 2-4.
