Valentijn Driessen reacts with increasing surprise to the much-discussed interview of Sven Mislintat at the German branch of Sky Sports. The now dismissed technical director of Ajax said that appointing Maurice Steijn as Ajax coach was a wrong choice. Mislintat also finds it strange that Erik ten Hag was unable to get Jadon Sancho to work at Manchester United.

Mislintat responded for the first time on German television to his dismissal from Ajax on Thursday. “It is good for the club that things are going a little better now that the coach has been changed,” he sneered at the now dismissed Steijn. “That also reflects on me in a positive way.”

“The dismissal also hurt a bit,” Mislintat acknowledged. “But that's football. I take responsibility for appointing the coach. But you learn from those kinds of mistakes, and that is important if you want to get back to work elsewhere.”

Driessen finds a very strange comment from Mislintat. “Of course he should have taken responsibility for all the players he brought in with which he saddled Steijn,” the journalist says in a video item from The Telegraph. “That Mislintat even dares to say all this… It's unbelievable. He also thinks he was given too little time. Had he stayed longer, Ajax would have been bankrupt.”

Criticism of Ten Hag
Mislintat also made a harsh judgment about Ten Hag's working method. The German does not understand why the Manchester United manager was unable to get Sancho to play. The Englishman recently returned to Borussia Dortmund after a disappointing spell at Old Trafford. As head scout of BVB Mislintat managed to lure Sancho to the Bundesliga in 2017.

“It really fascinates me in a negative way that Manchester United have not been able to get Sancho going,” Mislintat sneered at Ten Hag. “I think that Ten Hag was not able to get in to him is really madness.”

Driessen also finds Mislintat's comment extremely remarkable. “It's unbelievable that you have the courage to say that when you yourself have failed miserably at Ajax in every respect.”
