Ajax surprisingly went down on Sunday while visiting Go Ahead Eagles. Erik ten Hag’s team was overwhelmed in the Adelaarshorst by the fierce players from Deventer, who set a sensational 2-0 halftime score. Ajax pushed hard in the second half, but was unable to enforce more than a connecting goal from Steven Berghuis: 2-1. As a result, the leader sees PSV approaching two points, while Go Ahead is getting some air again thanks to the stunning victory: Kees van Wonderen’s team rises to twelfth place.
Remko Pasveer suffered a broken finger and will be replaced at Ajax for the time being by André Onana. Perr Schuurs and Devyne Rensch came in the back of the team ahead of the battered Jurriën Timber and Noussair Mazraoui. The initial phase was hopeful for Ajax, which immediately created two great opportunities. Blind and Haller both tried from volleys of about sixteen meters, which both times ended just wide. A new damper for the team from Amsterdam followed in injury time, when a failed shot by Luuk Brouwers ended up at the completely free Philippe Rommens, who ram the ball into the roof of the goal from close range: 2-0.
After the break, Ajax again gave chase va banque. Dusan Tadic’s header failed, while Antony couldn’t curl the ball into the far corner. Somewhat fortunately, Steven Berghuis managed to score Ajax’s connecting goal in the 64th minute. The midfielder reacted attentively to a passed high ball and headed it quickly behind Andries Noppert: 2-1. Ajax had just under half an hour to secure at least a point and put Go Ahead under even greater pressure. Substitute Danilo headed just wide from a pass by Lisandro Martínez, while Tadic saw his shot deflected by Noppert.
