The Barcelona administration has organized a press conference for Monday evening at 7 p.m., journalist Alfredo Martínez reports Monday morning via Twitter. The reason for the press conference is not known, but in Spain there are rumors that the board, headed by chairman Josep Maria Bartomeu, will resign on Monday evening.

Earlier on Monday, the club asked for a postponement of the referendum on the vote of no confidence filed against Bartomeu this month. Those socios would vote on the position of Bartomeu on November 1 and 2; if two-thirds would vote for his departure, he had to resign. Sport reports that the vote may not go ahead as the preses may resign of their own accord on Monday evening.

According to the newspaper, Barcelona finds it irresponsible to keep a physical mood in the Camp Nou in the middle of the corona crisis. To avoid a vote, the board would keep the honor to itself. A vote would be inconsistent with the rules to stay at home as much as possible to avoid the spread of the virus. Bartomeu turned to Pere Aragonès, the vice president of the Catalan government, but he did not want to end the referendum.

Bartomeu would leave in March anyway, because a vote will then be taken on a new chairman. If he leaves prematurely, he would like to nominate an interim president to ensure ‘continuity’. That chairman would come from the circles of Bartomeu himself. In recent months, Bartomeu has come under fire from the Barcelona supporters, partly because he was diametrically opposed to Lionel Messi in his attempts to leave the club. Last month, he was accused of corruption by the Catalan police: he is said to have made money from deals he has concluded on behalf of the club.
