UEFA and CONMEBOL will further intensify their cooperation. The football associations of Europe and South America announced on Tuesday afternoon that Italy and Argentina, the winners of the European Championship and the Copa América respectively, will meet in June 2022 in a match that will be dubbed the Copa EuroAmérica on social media. It is not yet known where the match will be played. An agreement has been reached on three editions of such an intercontinental Supercup.

The unions of both continents will also cooperate more closely in the field of women’s football, indoor football and youth football, they report in a joint statement. In addition, they continue to exchange referees and share training programs with each other. Referees have already been exchanged during the European Championship and the Copa América. Argentinian Fernando Rapallini was part of a referee team at the European Championship, but not as a head referee. A Spanish arbitral team led by Jesús Gil Manzano whistled three matches at the Copa América in Argentina and Colombia.

In the past, the winners of continental tournaments met in the Confederations Cup. That tournament was last organized in 2017. In 2019, FIFA announced that the tournament was being discontinued and that the World Cup for club teams was being expanded instead. The FIFA Arab Cup for Arab countries was also created. The first edition will be held in Qatar in November and December and serves as a prelude to the World Cup.
