Turkey is the opponent of the Dutch national team in the quarter finals of the European Championship. On Tuesday evening, the Turks were too strong for Austria with 1-2 thanks to two goals by Merih Demiral. Michael Gregoritsch scored for the Austrians, but a defeat appeared inevitable for the winner of Group D. The Netherlands and Turkey will play in Berlin next Saturday at 21:00.

Austria still had to do without Gernot Trauner, who is still suffering from a muscle injury he sustained earlier this European Championship in the match against Poland. Turkey will play without suspended captain Hakan Calhanoglu and Samet Akaydin. Kaan Ayhan and Abdülkerim Bardakçi took their places.

The Turks really shot out of the starting blocks, because after a minute of play the opening goal was already found. An inswinging corner kick from Arda Güler remained in the goalmouth of keeper Patrick Pentz, where Demiral was ready to shoot in from close range: 0-1.

Ten minutes later, Turkey took a hit, as Orkun Kökçü was shown a yellow card by referee Artur Soares Dias. As a result, the Benfica midfielder is suspended for the match against the Dutch national team next Saturday.

In the opening phase of the second half, Austria started to get more colour on their cheeks. Goalkeeper Mert Günok made a crucial save on an effort by Marko Arnautovic, while Konrad Laimer shot just wide a few minutes later.

After just under an hour of play, Turkey suddenly doubled their lead. It was Demiral who scored his second goal of the evening. The centre-back towered over everyone in the Austrian penalty area and headed in an excellent curling corner from Güler.

Austria recovered quite quickly, because seven minutes after the 0-2 the equalizer was found. For the third time the goal came from a corner kick, which was taken by Marcel Sabitzer. Stefan Posch extended with his head, after which Gregoritsch shot from the five-meter line: 1-2. In the final phase both teams went looking for a goal, but it was not found. Günok made a crucial save deep into injury time.
