Bayern Munich was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday evening. The team of coach Thomas Tuchel lost in extremis to SC Freiburg. Dayot Upamecano gave Bayern the lead before the break, after which Nicolas Höfler beautifully put the 1-1 on the scoreboard. Lucas Höler then knocked the Bavarian superpower out of the cup tournament with a penalty kick in the 95th minute.

Ryan Gravenberch and Daley Blind had to settle for a reserve role in the quarterfinals of the cup tournament, Matthijs de Ligt did start in the base, while Mark Flek started under the crossbar at Freiburg. Tuchel started his adventure at the record master excellent with a convincing victory over Borussia Dortmund (4-2). The coach changed his starting eleven in only one position compared to this game. João Cancelo replaced Alphonso Davies.

Leroy Sané handed out a first pinprick on behalf of Bayern Munich after more than ten minutes. The wing attacker pulled in and then fired just wide of the bottom left corner. The lead for the home team came after Upamecano convincingly headed Joshua Kimmich’s corner kick against the ropes: 1-0. For a long time, Freiburg did nothing to counter that, until Höfler, with less than half an hour on the clock, balanced the score with a nice long shot: 1-1.

Bayern had the better of the game in the second half and almost took the lead again after an hour, after Benjamin Pavard headed Kimmich’s free kick over the crossbar. In extra time then seemed to be in the making, but deep into injury time, referee Harm Osmers put the ball on the penalty spot after a handball from Jamal Musiala. Höler then left goalkeeper Yann Sommer without a chance from eleven meters and thus eliminated Bayern in the DFB-Pokal: 1-2.
