FC Groningen hopes to strengthen itself next season with Joey Pelupessy, so knows Football International Tuesday to report. The midfielder of Sheffield Wednesday will be out of his contract next summer and can therefore return to the Eredivisie transfer-free. The Pelupessy management tells the football weekly that several clubs are interested and that there is certainly no transition yet.

In Groningen Pelupessy can be reunited with a number of former teammates. At Heracles Almelo, for example, he took over the captaincy from Mark-Jan Fledderus, who currently functions as technical director for the northerners. Fledderus previously managed to bring Mike te Wierik and Bart van Hintum to Groningen, with whom Pelupessy also played together in Almelo. According to Football International A move to Groningen is anything but a foregone conclusion, as Pelupessy has also received offers from the Championship and clubs from Turkey.

Pelupessy left the Eredivisie in early 2018 for an adventure at Sheffield Wednesday, after he secured European football for the first time in Heracles club history a season earlier. Pelupessy went through the youth academy at FC Twente, but was unable to break through in Enschede. In the Championship he initially acted as a permanent employee, but he did not always have to count on a starting place last season. This season he has fought back into manager Darren Moore’s side and the central midfielder has 36 league appearances.

Sheffield Wednesday is having a difficult season at the second level and is penultimate four points behind Derby County, which has a safe place. The club started the season with a six point penalty for breaking the rules on expenses and income. Sheffield Wednesday was able to promote from League One to the Championship in 2012, but now threatens to drop back to the third level in England. In addition to Pelupessy, the Dutchman Joost van Aken is also under contract the Owls.
