Trabzonspor became champion of Turkey for the seventh time in its history on Saturday evening by drawing 2-2 against Alfons Groenendijk’s Antalyaspor in a swirling own stadium. In the early stages of the season, Trabzonspor built up an astronomical lead over the major top clubs, each of which started dramatically. In recent months, the club started to lose more and more points, but the lead over pursuer Fenerbahçe turned out to be more than enough. Trabzonspor had to wait a long time for the championship, because the last Turkish league title dates back to 1984.
Before the game, Trabzonspor knew that one point would be enough. With Stefano Denswil and Marek Hamsík once again in the starting line-up, the home team started the final championship game very well. Abdulkadir Omur reached Andreas Cornelius after three minutes with a low cross from the left, who only had to tap in: 1-0. Denswil did not get the ball in from a corner in the final phase of the first half, while Trabzon got away well with a goal from Haji Wright that was rejected due to offside.
After the break, the hosts ran into bigger problems, when Antalyaspor tied the score six minutes after the break. Houssam Ghacha got the ball out of hand and offered Houssam Ghacha a very simple goal: 1-1. Ugurcan Çakir then saved Trabzonspor from bigger problems by saving a penalty from Fredy, and minutes later Trabzon made the liberating 2-1. Once again Omur was the man behind the assist, this time with a lovely bounce towards Dorukhan Toköz. Things got tense when Wright intercepted a failed shot ten minutes before the end and finished it from close range: 2-2. Trabzonspor, however, remained on its feet and can call itself champion.
