Tottenham Hotspur failed to beat Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon. The Spurs seemed to be heading for a victory for a long time thanks to a goal from Lucas Moura, but still conceded a much-discussed goal in injury time. A handball by Eric Dier earned the visitors a penalty kick, after which Callum Wilson determined the final score at 1-1. Tottenham has now won one of its first three games, a draw and a loss.

Gareth Bale was not yet fit enough to make his debut for Tottenham and the Welshman watched the performance of his new colleagues from the stands. Sergio Reguilón, also taken over from Real Madrid, was also not in the starting line-up, as Ben Davies was preferred. With the Welshman in the team, Tottenham was the most dangerous match from the first whistle and in the opening minutes there were already opportunities for Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Kane. Goalkeeper Karl Darlow avoided an early deficit for Newcastle with two clever saves, but had to give in with 25 minutes on the clock when Harry Kane made an action on the left and his cross in front of the goal rolled towards Lucas.

For the Brazilian, it was a breeze at the far post to work in the opening goal and in the following minutes Tottenham almost doubled the lead via Kane and Heung-Min Son. A few minutes before half-time, a new chance followed for the South Korean, but his attempt eventually hit the crossbar. This turned out to be the last action of significance for Son as the forward was replaced by Steven Bergwijn after the break. The most notable role in the second half, however, was again for Darlow, who further limited the damage for Newcastle with a number of clever saves on bets from Kane, Lo Celso and Érik Lamele.

The visitors themselves knew little to oppose this, but suddenly came close to an equalizer in the final phase. A crazy moment with Davies and Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg almost resulted in an own goal and a penalty for Newcastle followed in stoppage time. A header from Andy Carroll touched Dier’s arm and after a long study of the images by the VAR, arbitrator Peter Bankes decided to point to the dot. Wilson then hit the opportunity hard through Hugo Lloris into the goal and in the commotion after the final whistle, Kane was given a red card for protesting.
