Tottenham Hotspur has decided not to partner with Gennaro Gattuso, reveals The Athletic Friday morning. After a conversation with the coach who suddenly left Fiorentina, the club management has come to the conclusion that a collaboration is not desirable. Gattuso appeared to be one of the top contenders after Paulo Fonseca dropped out, but North London will not be his new place of work.

Why Tottenham Gattuso will not present a contract is not exactly clear. Chairman Daniel Levy’s search for a new manager continues. Recently there was already a line through the name of Antonio Conte and on Thursday it was revealed that Fonseca is no longer in the running either. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the arrival of the coach who left AS Roma is ‘one hundred percent of the job’, despite the fact that in recent days it seemed that only the last folds had to be ironed out. Romano writes that the contracts had already been drawn up and that they only had to be signed.

Fonseca enjoyed tax benefits in Italy, where he had coached AS Roma for the past two years, but these do not apply in Britain. The talks were subsequently discontinued. However, after speaking with Gattuso, Levy has come to the conclusion that the Italian coach is not the right candidate for the long term. Earlier this year, the names of Erik ten Hag, Julian Nagelsmann, Hansi Flick and Mauricio Pochettino already appeared, after the London club said goodbye to Jose Mourinho.

The decision to pass Gattuso is likely to please some of the Tottenham supporters. The hashtag #NoToGattuso was even trending on Twitter for a while. A campaign was even launched to stop Gattuso’s arrival. Many fans brought up old and remarkable statements from the former midfielder. Gattuso has spoken out openly in the past against same-sex marriage. In addition, he found it strange in 2013 that Kevin-Prince Boateng ran furious from the field after racist chants from the stands. The clubless coach also questioned the presence of women in football, which also caused quite a stir.
