Latest update:

After a difficult opening phase, the Netherlands took the lead against Romania thanks to Cody Gakpo. The Dutch have since firmly controlled the match, but there is more than just a sense of euphoria among the fans: Memphis Depay put down a dramatic statistic in the first half of the round of 16 match.

The Netherlands had to take no less than ten corner kicks in the first half. Nine of them were taken by Memphis. On paper, the Netherlands have a very strong air force with Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Aké and Stefan de Vrij, but the corners from Memphis did not pose any danger.

National coach Ronald Koeman may also have come to that conclusion, because the ninth corner kick for the Dutch team was not taken by Memphis, but by Xavi Simons.

“It's an absolute minus point of this first half,” said NOS-commentator Jan Roelfs at the end of the first half. “The Netherlands had to take so many corner kicks, but that has to yield something at some point. This tenth corner kick is also messed up by Memphis.” He shot the corner kick directly behind without bringing the ball into the field.

Also Rik Elfrink from the Eindhoven Daily Newspaper is critical of Memphis. “The corners of Memphis (not Memphus) do not get enough”, according to the PSV watcher, who is apparently also critical of the pronunciation of the name by the commentator on TV. “Oranje has also not expressed its superiority sufficiently in the score”, according to Elfrink.
