Jurgen Ekkelenkamp can extend his contract with Ajax, reports The Telegraph Tuesday evening. The midfielder has a permanent contract until the summer of 2022, but can sign an improved contract until mid-2024. If he does, FC Twente, Vitesse and sc Heerenveen would like to hire him, the newspaper said.
The Eredivisionists are not the only clubs interested, because the German 1. FSV Mainz 05 and an unnamed Belgian top club hope to buy him from Ajax. Ekkelenkamp is expected to make a decision about his future in the short term. The midfielder played fifteen times in the Eredivisie last season, four times in the Champions League and four times in the TOTO KNVB Cup.
Ekkelenkamp, 21, has been associated with Twente for quite some time. A year ago there seemed to be a lease, but then Ajax did not want to let the midfielder go. In May, when the season was not yet over, assistant coach Andries Ulderink of Twente said it was still too early to talk about a transfer from Ekkelenkamp. “But he’s definitely on our radar,” he added to the program FootballTime.
“Of course we continued to follow him. I can well imagine that we will certainly make another attempt to see if he can come to FC Twente”, Ulderink indicated. Jurgen Ekkelenkamp was on the field for ninety minutes at Ajax in the last two competition matches of last season, which was already champion at that time. Over the entire season, he had four basic places in the Eredivisie.
