The possible arrival of Rafael Benitez as new manager is angering some of Everton’s supporters. Photos that have surfaced on social media show that a banner with threatening language was found near the Spanish coach’s home in Wirral, in the area near Liverpool. ‘We know where you live, don’t sign a contract’, the banner reads. The possible appointment of Benitez is sensitive because of his past with fellow city rivals Liverpool.

Benítez worked at Liverpool between 2004 and 2010 and has therefore been away for 11 years the Reds. Despite this, he has always kept a house in Wirral, where he lives with his wife and two daughters. It is not yet known whether the intended new manager of the Toffees has already seen the banner. It is also not clear which group is behind the much-discussed protest action. On Twitter, among others, many supporters and football fans speak shame of the threatening texts towards Benitez.

When Everton owner Farhad Moshiri put Benítez’s name at the top of the list of possible candidates, it quickly caused angry reactions from the club’s supporters. Many fans recall old statements of the trainer. In 2007, when the Spaniard was still attached to Liverpool, Everton was described by him as a ‘small club’. Apologies were soon made at the time, although not everyone has forgotten the sneer yet.

Despite all the objections, Moshiri wants to push through the arrival of the former coach of Real Madrid and Internazionale, it sounds in the English media. There is a good chance that he will already be presented this week as the successor to Carlo Ancelotti. Benítez, clubless since his departure from Chinese Dalian Yifang in January, has a three-year contract ready at Goodison Park.
