The recent Classic in De Kuip has made an impression on Florian Grillitsch. The Austrian midfielder has never experienced such a hostile atmosphere in his professional career. Grillitsch was on the bench during the semi-final win in the TOTO KNVB Cup against Feyenoord (1-2), but came on as a substitute deep into injury time.

“When we recently played against Feyenoord in De Kuip, I got a very hostile feeling,” says Grillitsch in the Ajax Life Podcast. “I had never experienced that. I felt so much hatred towards us… Of course you can support your own team, that’s normal. It’s also understandable that you get called names now and then, but there was so much hatred towards us as players there. Maybe a little too much.”

Davy Klaassen was hit by a lighter from the audience during the second act of the Classic. The semi-final of the TOTO KNVB Cup then completely derailed. The game was then temporarily halted for several minutes. “In the dressing room we said to each other: we have to take ourselves to a higher level and we have to show it on the field and win the game,” continues Grillitsch. “I think that’s the best answer.”

The controller also says that he is very pleased with the Amsterdam supporters. “Ajax is a very big club and you can see that in the supporters. They are also of a high level. In Germany, the traditional clubs have fanatical fans and there is a positive atmosphere. I think Ajax has the best fans in the Netherlands “They provide great support and the team feels this too. In the more important games, such as against Feyenoord and PSV, I even felt the support from the bench.”
