Donny van de Beek is preparing for his second game as a basic player at Manchester United. The midfielder, who came over from Ajax, will start the Brighton & Hove Albion away match on Wednesday evening from 8.45 p.m. in the eighth final of the EFL Cup. On Saturday, Van de Beek competed for another minute against the same club (2-3 victory). At Brighton, Joël Veltman, just like in the previous two rounds of the EFL Cup, gets a starting place from trainer Graham Potter.

Partly in view of Sunday’s league match against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United trainer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is making no fewer than ten changes to the starting line-up. The only player to keep his starting spot compared to the league match against Brighton is Victor Lindelöf. Defensive partner Harry Maguire is out of shape and is relieved by Eric Bailly, while Aaron Bin-Wassaka is replaced in right-back position by Diogo Dalot and left-back Brandon Williams takes Luke Shaw’s place.

As in the previous round of the EFL Cup, last Tuesday against Luton Town (0-3 win), Dean Henderson takes over from David de Gea under the crossbar. Up front, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood get a rest, which leads to basic spots for Daniel James, Juan Mata and Odion Ighalo. The latter acts as the lone striker in Solskjaer’s 4-2-3-1 system.

The entire midfield is also replaced: Nemanja Matic, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba make way for Fred, Van de Beek and Scott McTominay. Van de Beek thus gets his second starting place since his move to Manchester United. In the previous round against Luton Town, he was on the field for 78 minutes; On Saturday he came within the lines a minute before time against Brighton. Countryman Veltman remained on the bench on Saturday and is not the only ex-Eredivisionist at Brighton on Wednesday evening, because Alireza Jahanbakhsh also starts in the base.
