England beat Switzerland on Saturday in a penalty shootout. Pickford's bidon was instructed to dive to his left when Manuel Akanji took a penalty, according to a photo that quickly circulated on social media. Thanks to the correct instructions, the England keeper eventually saved the Swiss' penalty, after which the Three Lions won the series 5-3.

Switzerland took the lead in the second half with a tap-in from Breel Embolo. England had to chase hard and forced extra time with a fine goal from Bukayo Saka: 1-1.

No goals were scored in extra time, after which a penalty shootout had to decide the match in the quarter-finals of the European Championship. England managed to score five times in a row from eleven meters, but Switzerland missed once.

It was Swiss star player Akanji who missed the first penalty. The Manchester City defender produced a weak shot towards the bottom right corner, from the penalty taker's point of view. Pickford had the instruction on his bidon to dive to his left from his own perspective and managed to save the penalty with ease.
