Mats Wieffer is in the concrete interest of Atlético Madrid, the Feyenoord midfielder confirms after the victory in the TOTO KNVB Cup over AZ (2-0). The Spanish superpower signed up for Wieffer at the end of January, but Feyenoord did not want to cooperate under any circumstances. “I'm not someone who makes things difficult,” says Wieffer to Hans Kraay junior ESPN.

Monday came Football International already with the news about the interest in Wieffer. On Wednesday, the Feyenoord player spoke openly about this for the first time. “Yes, they did report, yes. It was up to the clubs, and in the end they did not reach an agreement.”

Wieffer accepted his fate. “I'm not someone who is going to be difficult, or not come to training or anything like that. I'm not like that. I would have liked to talk to Atlético, but if the clubs can't reach an agreement, it won't be of much use.”

That is why Wieffer will play at Feyenoord for at least another half season. “I'm really enjoying it here. We'll see in the summer to see if something comes up, and otherwise I'm really in the right place at Feyenoord. I'm really enjoying it here. I'm also the guarantee that I will play a lot. With a view to the European Championship, that is also important.”

Feyenoord again defeated AZ on Wednesday, which was already beaten in the Eredivisie on Sunday. “Today went better than Sunday, especially in putting pressure,” says Wieffer. Arne Slot put Bart Nieuwkoop, originally a right back, on the right wing.

“Bart played a very important role,” says Wieffer. “That is something he can do very well: applying pressure with a lot of power. It is very nice for the team that he plays there. He performed well today. I am happy with Bart.”

AZ was not a shadow of itself in De Kuip. “They hesitated a lot and had to play long balls. We also had the plan to play the long ball a little earlier and win the second ball. The chances were there at some point. I don't think we had many, but It's nice if they get into it a little faster.”
