Mike Verweij has provided an update on the developments surrounding Steven Bergwijn and Brian Brobbey. According to the journalist of The Telegraph Ajax is still in the race to sign the duo on a rental basis during the winter transfer period. Where the chances of Brobbey’s arrival have increased, Ajax would have received competition from Italy and a top Spanish club in the battle for Bergwijn’s signature.

Last Monday Verweij told in Kick-off Eredivisie that RB Leipzig has rejected a first offer from Ajax. During the Friday edition, the journalist will provide an update on Brobbey. “What’s next? The consequence is that they are working hard to get Brobbey to Amsterdam. And those opportunities seem to be increasing. Rent with mandatory option to buy? Mandatory option I don’t know, but at least initially rent, with option to buy, I think.”

“There are also developments around Bergwijn”, continues Verweij. “You have probably read in the English media that Conte does not really feel the need to keep Bergwijn for Tottenham Hotspur. However, Ajax has competition. There is a big Spanish club and there are also some Italian clubs that want to rent it. So Overmars has to work hard to get him to Amsterdam. I don’t know which Spanish club it is, but it is a top club.”

Valentijn Driessen is of the opinion that Bergwijn would do better to leave for Ajax. “If that boy really wants to stay in the picture with the Dutch national team, then he is better placed at Ajax than at a top Spanish club. There you are again one of the thirty in a group. You don’t know how it would go at Ajax, but if he performs well there, he will be able to play.” Verweij joins his colleague. “The advantage for Bergwijn at Ajax is that he can immediately start against FC Utrecht and PSV, because then Haller is still at the Africa Cup. Then Tadic could be in the lead. If you win convincingly in Utrecht and against PSV, then the trainer has few reasons to change things.”
