Kai Havertz took the winning goal in the Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City (0-1) last season. The German attacking midfielder felt some nerves when he had the ball in front of an empty goal after passing goalkeeper Ederson. Havertz was afraid that if he missed the opportunity he would become a meme.

“Yes, one hundred percent,” Havertz replied when asked on Chelsea’s official website whether he felt any nerves when he was given the ball in front of an empty goal for the kick-off during the Champions League final. “Those are the hardest moments. If you miss you will pass by on YouTube, Instagram and in every meme. So I thought: please, I have to score now. That happened and then those are the best moments you can have in football.”

Chelsea bought Havertz over a year ago for eighty million euros from Bayer Leverkusen. So far, he has scored 10 goals and 10 assists in 54 official games. “Of course you get used to it as you play more matches. You have a different type of football in England. After six months it became easier and easier and I was able to find my place well. I feel good on the field.”

“Playing based on my instincts has always been one of my main strengths. Just play football and don’t think too much about other things. Everyone expects my price tag to play very well at Chelsea. If not, people start talking. But everything got better after six months,” concludes the 22-year-old attacking midfielder. Havertz is currently with the German national team for the international matches against Romania (2-1 win) and North Macedonia (Monday night).
