Naci Ünüvar made his mark last Friday with a nice assist in the match between FC Eindhoven and Jong Ajax (1-3). The eighteen-year-old wing attacker tells in an interview with The Telegraph that he experienced a ‘false start’ to the season due to illness and the death of his grandfather, but that ‘everything is now running as he wants’. Ünüvar hopes to be able to make his appearance again in the first team of Ajax as soon as possible.

Ünüvar speaks of his most beautiful action ever in professional football ‘in terms of technical skills’, but he does not want to say that the assist symbolizes his resurrection. “I just try to have fun on the field and this was a great example of that. A lot was said and written of course last season. That made me mentally stronger. I think I’ve been on an upward trend since January. You also saw that in the number of goals (six, ed.) last season after the winter break. Luckily I was able to continue that.”

“I feel fit, play a lot of matches and my efficiency is going up. With five goals and five assists this season I am on the right track. I get a lot of support and trust from trainer John Heitinga and I would like to repay that,” continues Ünüvar. He has already scored five goals and five assists in eleven Kitchen Champion Division matches this season, after a ‘false start’ to the football season in his own words. “Because I had to leave the training camp in De Lutte due to illness. Then you start the season with a backlog.”

“After that, my grandfather passed away, so I had to miss a match (against FC Dordrecht, ed.). But from that moment on it actually goes the way I want,” emphasizes the young attacker. He made his debut in Ajax’s first two seasons ago – as a scoring substitute in the cup match against Spakenburg – but was no longer part of the match selection. He hopes to be able to make minutes in the main force again as soon as possible. “It is up to me to keep knocking on the door with my performance at Jong Ajax.”
