Wout Weghorst is ready for the new season. The 28-year-old striker of VfL Wolfsburg has returned from vacation and is looking forward to his possible collaboration with Louis van Gaal at the Dutch. Weghorst believes he can put himself in the spotlight with the new national coach, who once provided him with advice.

Despite his excellent performances with the Dutch national team, Weghorst was ignored for a long time by Ronald Koeman and Frank de Boer. The latter brought the center striker to the Dutch just before the European Championship, after which Weghorst played in all matches at the European Championship. “It’s only about what you perform,” he says in conversation with Football International about his chances under Van Gaal. “That will be rewarded. I don’t really know Louis van Gaal.”

However, the center striker had already had contact with the new national coach. “He was once at an AZ game. I was happy afterwards, because I scored twice. Afterwards I spoke with him briefly. He congratulated me, but also said that I had to move more to the first post. if you had done that, you could have scored much more often.’ It was a good moment for me to meet him. He is a very successful trainer. Who knows, maybe I can play under him soon.”

Weghorst also has to deal with a Dutch trainer at Wolfsburg: Mark van Bommel was given the lead on 1 July. “I didn’t know him yet, I’ve seen him here for a few days now,” said Weghorst. “He is a personality and a pleasant person.” The attacker believes in the championship with Wolfsburg. “Now it will be everywhere: ‘Weghorst says Wolfsburg will be champion.’ But I really mean it. You always have to go for the highest. If you don’t believe that you can achieve something like that, you will never achieve it. But it is also clear that there are teams that have better teams than us. But if we get there If we all believe in it, then we can get amazing results.”
