Numbers the Dutch

Justin Bijlow: 7
In his second international match, Bijlow kept a clean sheet for the first time. The goalkeeper was not often put to the test, but made no mistakes when it did. He clamped a low shot from Milutin Osmajic into the short corner and won a duel with Risto Radunovic, when the left back suddenly appeared in front of his goal: Bijlow narrowed his corner and snatched the ball from the Montenegrin’s feet.

Denzel Dumfries: 6.5
Dumfries was preferred over Jurriën Timber and was tireless on the right flank as usual. He was constantly present in the penalty area as an extra striker, making life miserable for his guards. By taking a ball straight out of the air, he prepared an opportunity for Depay in the eighteenth minute. Defensively, Dumfries had a hard time with Risto Radunovic, who he allowed to send a dangerous cross. After the break, the right back handed in the ball to Mugosa through a bad wide pass to De Ligt, giving the striker a shooting opportunity.

Stefan de Vrij: 7.5
The defender of Internazionale was described by Louis van Gaal as the best player of the Dutch against Norway. He played even better against Montenegro. The defender won his important matches in the first half, played under the pressure, intercepted balls in midfield and was of constructive value. He seemed to have no problems in the second half either, until De Ligt missed out and De Vrij sent a weak pass back under pressure from Mugosa, forcing Bijlow to act. Ten minutes before the end, De Vrij tried to brighten up his match with a goal, but his long shot was parried.

Matthijs de Ligt: 6
De Ligt started the game with an unfortunate pass to the side, but then played a good first half. He was important in the eighteenth minute by winning a duel with Dusan Lagator and calmly heading the ball back. Moments later, De Ligt secured a goal kick by widening himself in a duel for the ball at the back line. In the second half, De Ligt missed the ball twenty minutes before the end, after which a great opportunity arose for Mugosa.

Tyrell Malacia: 7
The eyes were on the debuting left-back, who appeared on the scene without hesitation. He played well under the pressure along the sidelines in the first half and had a good connection with Gakpo in particular. Malacia sometimes failed to cover the entire left wing when the opportunity arose and he got away well after losing to Adam Marusic in the penalty area in the first half. Malacia got away even better when a return pass from him suddenly ended up at Mugosa’s feet and the attacker was not accurate eye to eye with Bijlow. The Feyenoord player grabbed the head and immediately realized that he was making a big mistake, which fortunately remained without consequences for him. He was then credited with the assist for Gakpo’s goal. Two minutes before the end he put Sead Haksabanovic off the ball after a good sprint.

Georginio Wijnaldum: 6
In the first half, Wijnaldum combined well with Berghuis in the penalty area a few times. Just after the break, the midfielder’s hesitation led to Gibraltar’s first chance. After an hour, Wijnaldum fired a dangerous long shot himself. The captain didn’t play well until he decided the game twenty minutes before time with an excellent shot into the right corner after a good run and ditto assumption.

Frenkie de Jong: 7.5
With beautiful attacks, De Jong brought life to the brewery at times when it was necessary. He passed opponents as if they were not there and then managed to find his fellow players, creating space for the the Dutch. With good interceptions and wide passes, De Jong was also of value in the second half.

Davy Klaassen: 6
Especially in the first half hour Klaassen played unlucky. He struggled to control the ball and missed a good shooting opportunity. After that, however, he got better at his game: with a nice, backward header he hit the bar and then the midfielder looked strong in a duel for the ball. In the second half Klaassen did not appear much in the play, although he had a fine capture of the ball in midfield ten minutes after the break.

Steven Berghuis: 7
Berghuis was one of the most criticized players of the Dutch after the game against Norway and also started the game disappointingly against Montenegro. He struggled to pass his man on the sidelines and his wide passes missed the right direction. Gradually, however, Berghuis came out better, with which he helped shape the advance of the Dutch. He offered Klaassen a free shooting opportunity and sent good passes to Wijnaldum and Gakpo. In the second half he was close to a goal with a shot from the box, before sending a brilliant assist to Wijnaldum: Berghuis immediately executed what he had in mind, and with success.

Memphis Depay: 9
Depay was of great value to the the Dutch with two goals. He broke open the game with a devastating penalty, which he deserved. The attacker thus rewarded himself for a strong first half, in which he sent several nice (stitch) passes. Under pressure, Depay shielded the ball well and in the end he also deserved the penalty. His fantastic pass to Dumfries in the eighth minute also caught the eye, although the same applied to a hopeless long shot shortly afterwards. In the second half, many of Depay’s actions were successful: with subtle passes he helped the game forward and with a convincing shot into the short corner he made it 2-0. Finally, he gave a young fan who came onto the pitch the day of his life by posing for a selfie.

Cody Gakpo: 8
Gakpo may have played a little too much in the service of his teammates at first and didn’t take a shot himself when the opportunity arose. But he did that fifteen minutes before the end, when he thrilled ‘his’ Philips Stadium with a wonderful long shot in the top right corner. His instinct to help his teammates was also expressed in several instances where he defended well. With a nice cross he prepared a header from Klaassen that landed on the crossbar; Gakpo Depay also played before his deserved penalty and his goal in the second half.
