The KNVB will try, together with the football associations of Belgium and Germany, to bring in the organization of the World Cup for women in 2027. The three associations have already expressed their interest in the global final tournament to FIFA. The plans have yet to be developed; there is still to be talks with authorities and consultation about the potential host cities and training locations, the reports NOS Monday.

Women’s football in the Netherlands has been on the rise for years. In 2017, the Oranje Leeuwinnen became European champions for the first time in history. In their own country, the final against Denmark was won 4-2. Last year, Sarina Wiegman’s team reached the World Cup final, losing to the United States. Belgium only once participated in a major final tournament. Last year the Red Flames no further than the group stage. German women’s football has been among the absolute top for years.

“Women’s football in our countries is indeed in different phases of development, but we share the aspiration to give sport a boost nationally and globally by organizing this World Cup”, the KNVB responded to the NOS. “We believe that through this piece of teamwork we can really make a difference and increase the chance to organize this tournament.”

The Netherlands has experience in organizing final tournaments. In addition to the European Championship for women in 2017, EURO 2000 was organized together with Belgium twenty years ago. Germany had organized the European Championship for women in 1989 and 2001 and was already host country for the World Cup in 2011. It is not yet known when FIFA will allocate the organization for the 2027 World Cup. The next World Cup will be held in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.

Gijs de Jong, secretary general of the KNVB, thinks the cooperation with Belgium and Germany is a good fit for the sport. “Women’s football is traditionally known for its strong sense of community, in which all those involved have an eye for the bigger picture, namely taking the sport further. Both on and off the field ”, he says The Telegraph. “The fact that we are tackling this project together as three football competitors, and also good neighbors, ties in very nicely with this philosophy. We believe that through this piece of teamwork we can really make a difference and increase the chance to organize this tournament. ”
