Numbers the Dutch

Maarten Stekelenburg: 6,5
Only seven minutes before the end Stekelenburg had to make his first serious save. A header from Karim Onisiwo caused no problems for the goalkeeper. Stekelenburg effortlessly plucked balls from the sides or from midfield. His kicks were not always clean, but otherwise there is little to notice on the game of the routine.

Denzel Dumfries: 7.5
Once again Dumfries played an absolute leading role in attacking terms. Against Ukraine, he scored the winning goal; against Austria he made the 2-0 and earned the penalty from which the the Dutch opened the score. At his goal, he walked with Malen and shot from close range, thus deciding the match. Not all of his offensive contributions were successful, but with his strength and energy he was of great value. Dumfries was important defensively in the fifth minute, when he put Andreas Ulmer in the box of the ball with a firm push.

Stefan de Vrij: 6,5
“Very strong”, Pierre van Hooijdonk called the first half of De Vrij. The defender set the tone in the first minute, when he looked convincing in a fight for the ball. In the fifth minute he was cut out by Ulmer on the edge of the sixteen-meter area, but that slippery was solved by Dumfries. In the final phase of the second half, he let Onisiwo walk away from his back and the substitute was able to head on goal. With careless loss of the ball, De Vrij seemed to herald Austrian danger eight minutes before the end, but De Ligt put a stop to that. There were also good contributions. The best moment of his match was his interception in minute 49, when he guessed Marcel Sabitzer’s intentions and intercepted his wide pass for the the Dutch sixteen-meter area. After a corner from Depay, De Vrij got a big chance after an hour, but he left it unused

Matthijs de Ligt: 8.5
His first move was not a very happy one – an impure back pass to Stekelenburg was barely kept within the lines by the keeper – but after that De Ligt played an unparalleled game. The defender, back in the starting lineup after groin complaints, looked calm on the ball and convincing in the duels; important moments were his flawless tackle on the ball in a duel with Christoph Baumgartner in the penalty area and the way in which he headed a shot from the same Baumgartner to the ground, allowing Stekelenburg to pick up the ball. Shortly after the break, De Ligt cleared a cross from the sixteen-meter area; after an hour, he failed to crown his strong performance with a goal, when he had a huge header opportunity and should have scored. Eight minutes before the end, he reacted alertly by stopping Sabitzer after De Vrij lost the ball; a moment later he stumbled out.

Daley Blind: 7
Blind was, as usual, of value in the build-up from a footballing point of view. He sent good passes and was calm on the ball, even when he was put under pressure. “With his intelligence he adds so much to the team playing football”, was the verdict of Van Hooijdonk halfway through the match. In the second half he blocked another pass before, apparently to his own surprise, being substituted in minute 64.

Patrick van Aanholt: 7
While Van Aanholt’s contribution from an attacking point of view was still limited against Ukraine, on Thursday evening he created the necessary danger from the left flank. Although by no means all his actions were clean – sometimes he gave too tight balls or let the ball bounce off his foot – he prepared two huge goals in the final phase of the first half with a great cross pass to Weghorst and after a good combination with De Jong. opportunities for. He also showed himself in the second half, with good combinations with Wijnaldum and Depay, before he was substituted in minute 64.

Marten de Roon: 5
De Roon got off to a strong start. He was alert to Austria’s loss of ball and therefore ensured good interceptions in midfield. Since he lost the ball in minute fourteen and corrected that with a hard tackle that resulted in a yellow card, De Roon was less happy in his actions. In the first half he lost the ball ten times, more than any other player of the Dutch. After the break De Roon was virtually invisible and sixteen minutes before the end he was replaced by Ryan Gravenberch.

Frenkie de Jong: 8
De Jong brought the the Dutch game with the necessary flair. He was constantly looking for the footballing, attacking solution, even when he was under pressure. The midfielder made his first appearance with a nice rush in the fifth minute, showing three players his heels, and was at the root of danger several times with conquests or good passes. After the break, De Jong was less dominant, but overall he played a very strong game.

Georginio Wijnaldum: 5.5
At a number of moments Wijnaldum asserted himself in a positive way, for example by turning away from opponents under pressure and initiating a counterattack. Overall, however, Wijnaldum cannot look back on a strong game. The game largely passed the midfielder, who was still one of the best players against Ukraine on Sunday. If he did have the ball, he repeatedly failed to serve Weghorst when the situation was appropriate.

Memphis Depay: 6.5
Depay played a match of extremes. He opened the score in Amsterdam with a flawless penalty kick and was essential in the preparation of the 2-0 with a magnificent through pass to Donyell Malen. Depay’s troughs were also deep: especially in the first half, he rarely had control of the ball and was sloppy in passing. Four minutes before half time he missed a huge chance to score. In the second half, Depay’s intentions succeeded more often: for example, he delivered two threatening corners after an hour, which resulted in great opportunities for De Vrij and De Ligt. Nine minutes before time, Depay was replaced by Luuk de Jong.

Wout Weghorst: 5.5
Four minutes before half time, Weghorst surprised friend and foe by putting the ball aside towards Depay with a great shooting chance. It was an intelligent choice, but unfortunately his teammate missed the opportunity. At another point in the first half, he just failed to clear Dumfries up front by playing the ball from behind Alaba; Weghorst opted for a pass to the left flank. In the second half, after a corner from Depay, he headed the ball well back to De Vrij, who therefore had a good chance of heading. He also had some unfortunate moves after the break, before being substituted in minute 64. Weghorst was relatively little involved in the the Dutch game, although he tried to be a focal point.
