Dani de Wit is in his last weeks as an AZ player, he has announced NH. The midfielder says he is ready for something different. De Wit is in his fifth season and has so far played 188 games on behalf of the Alkmaarders.

While De Wit was always assured of a starting place at AZ in previous years, things are slightly different this season. The midfielder ended up temporarily on the bench under Pascal Jansen and clearly had a hard time with it.

De Wit has now regained his place in the team and can count on the full confidence of Maarten Martens. However, after the current season he would rather embark on an adventure at a new club.

“I notice that I am ready for a new challenge,” he says. “It feels a bit mixed. Five years is quite a long time for a footballer, so I have been quite loyal to this club.”

De Wit transferred from Ajax to AZ in the summer of 2019 for around two million euros, as he was unable to break through in Amsterdam. He turned out to be a permanent fixture in Alkmaar, mainly due to his work ethic.

“I assume that next weekend against FC Utrecht will be my last match,” De Wit continues. “You never know for sure, especially now that strange scenarios can happen, but I think this will be the last.”

If AZ wins 1-0 against Utrecht next weekend and Twente draws 1-1 at PEC Zwolle, both clubs will have to decide who will qualify for the Champions League through a decider.

“As long as no agreement has been made and no contracts have been signed, it is never certain, but I assume that I will leave,” said De Wit. “At the moment it feels best to take on a new challenge. We have to see if it will happen, because you don't just exchange AZ.”

De Wit, together with Jordy Clasie, is one of the longest-serving players in the current AZ selection. Both players were signed in the summer of 2019. De Wit's contract expires at the end of next month, meaning AZ earns nothing from him.
