After the elimination at the European Championship, Frank de Boer will ‘think quietly’ whether he will continue as national coach of the Dutch. After the 0-2 defeat against the Czech Republic in Budapest, the trainer announced that he wants to evaluate the tournament. Pierre van Hooijdonk speaks of a ‘glorious tournament’, while Rafael van der Vaart hands out a three as a mark for the trainer.

After the defeat in the eighth final, De Boer was asked by reporter Jeroen Stekelenburg whether he will continue to work as national coach. “I don’t have to answer that yet,” De Boer responded. “We’re going to think about it calmly. Right now I’m in an incredible hangover, just like all the players and all the fans. It was great to see the fans back. We would have loved to give them something, but unfortunately that didn’t happen.”

According to Van der Vaart, De Boer was asked a question about his future. “That is a fair question,” said the former international. “How he answers is good, because what should he say about it? His coaching career… this felt a bit like last chance. Of course he made some bad choices. He was well on his way, it looked a bit better. Then this is such a deception that he will really think about whether he wants to remain national coach. The KNVB will also start thinking: are we going to continue like this?”

“In the end it was an inglorious tournament”, added Van Hooijdonk. “If you look at the opponents that we had in the group and you then go out against these Czechs… Then take the two matches in the preparation as well”, he refers to the practice matches with Scotland (2-2) and Georgia (3-0). When presenter Tom Egbers asked for a score for De Boer, Van der Vaart didn’t have to think twice: “A three. That’s just how you fly out like that. Then you have played a very mediocre tournament.”

After the elimination of the the Dutch squad at the European Championship, Theo Janssen was most surprised about De Boer’s words. “The defeat is most noticeable, together with the national coach. That he is going to think about whether he should continue. If you as a trainer start something … Of course it did not go well, that is clear. But you can also be combative and make sure it gets better. You can also make sure it’s in good shape at the next tournament.”
