Despite the disappointing performance at the European Championships in Germany, the Dutch national team has already raised 12.25 million euros in football. That amount could increase considerably in the coming weeks if the Dutch team goes far in the prestigious final tournament.

The KNVB received 9.25 million euros as a starting premium for participation in the tournament. Based on the performance in Germany, the Dutch internationals have 'only' raised 3 million euros in football.

Each team that qualifies for the eighth finals receives 1.5 million euros. Although third place was not what the KNVB had hoped for, the cash register still rang in Zeist. The 2-1 win over Poland earned an extra 1 million euros and the draw with France was good for 500,000 euros.

If the Dutch team manages to beat Romania, they will earn an additional 2.5 million euros for qualifying for the quarter-finals. A spot in the semi-finals will earn them 4 million euros. As a finalist, the Dutch team could earn another 5 million euros, while the winner of the European Championship will earn an additional 8 million euros.

The Dutch team is therefore not only interested in sports to get far in the European championship. In total, UEFA will hand out no less than 331 million euros in prize money during the tournament. Spain has won the highest amount of prize money so far, by winning all group matches: no less than 13.75 million euros.
