The the Dutch Women have won the second game in the World Cup qualifying series. Four days after the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic, the team of national coach Mark Parsons was 0-2 too strong for Iceland in Reykjavik. With the win, the the Dutch Lionesses share the lead in Group C with the Czech Republic, which won 8-0 against Cyprus earlier today: four points from two matches. Only the group winner qualifies directly for the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The runner-up plays the play-offs.

The better the Dutch women went into halftime with a minimal lead thanks to a goal by Daniëlle van de Donk. The tone of the game was set in the first fifteen minutes when Parsons’ team surrounded the Icelandic penalty area. That resulted in chances for Vivianne Miedema and Van de Donk. In between, Sari van Veenendaal had to come into action on a bet in the short corner.

After more than twenty minutes of play, it was hit. Jackie Groenen seemed to start shooting, but opted for a through ball: Van de Donk, who played as an attacker, pushed the ball into the short corner with her left. However, it was not the prelude to a sparkling remainder of the first half. Iceland was not able to really make it difficult for the Netherlands and at the same time kept Parsons’ team away. The the Dutch Lionesses got no further than a failed attempt by Jill Roord.

In the first fifteen minutes after the break, the game went up and down, with opportunities for Lieke Martens and Sherida Spitse, while a bet from Iceland ended up in the side net. Groenen beautifully signed for the 0-2 after 65 minutes: the midfielder did not think twice about a falling ball and hit hard from more than twenty meters. Miedema, Van de Donk, Miedema again and Martens missed opportunities for the 0-3 in a short time.

the Dutch is the number four in the world and hit the current number sixteen of the FIFA ranking in Iceland. The other opponents in the group (Czech Republic, Belarus and Cyprus) are also significantly lower in the global ranking. The Netherlands has already qualified for the European Championship, which will be held in England next year.
