Figures Orange

Marco Bizot: 6.5
“If Bizot sees this again, he will think he could have done more,” said analyst Pierre van Hooijdonk about the opening goal of Sergio Canales. “This ball can go in, but the ball rolls in more than a meter from the post.” Bizot put out a foot, but just missed the ball. Just before half time, the debutant did not punch away a corner from Spain very convincingly, but he did counter an effort from Álvaro Morata and delivered several well-made kicks in the first half. After the break, Bizot held a bet from Héctor Bellerín from the left corner and held a shot by substitute Adama Traoré.

Hans Hateboer: 5
Hateboer’s performance was limited to one half. He did not make a great impression. The right back won one of his three matches and delivered two passes: a reasonable and a weak one. On the stroke of half time Hateboer misjudged a situation, which suddenly created a lot of space on his flank and Asensio appeared freely. In the end, the danger was limited. His replacement Dumfries was more of a threat in the second half.

Denzel Dumfries: 8
Dumfries can look back on a predominantly fine raid. It was nice to see how he threw himself in front of a shot from Marco Asensio twelve minutes after his substitution. Not much later, however, a mistake by Dumfries almost led to a goal against: after a bad defense, Spain took over the ball in the ashes of the field and Koke got a good chance of shooting. The ball just flew over Bizot’s goal. Halfway through the second half, the right back was sent off from the flank by Stengs, after which Dumfries acted well: he sprinted forward, stayed calm and sought out the detached Depay. However, a bounce made it a difficult ball for Depay. Just before the end of the game, the PSV player also created an opportunity for Luuk de Jong. If Dumfries’ pass had been tighter, the Orange might have won.

Joël Veltman: 6
Just before Morata gave the decisive pass in preparation for Spain’s opening goal, it was Veltman who failed to cover and lost sight of scorer Sergio Canales. Aside from that incident, his defensive actions have been solid. Halfway through the first half, he covered well and he conquered the ball in midfield; after Blind boarded incorrectly, he took the ball from Morata around the penalty area in a one-on-one duel. Eight minutes before the end, he intercepted a potentially threatening through ball from the Spaniards.

Stefan de Vrij: 7.5
In the second half, De Vrij made his entrance as a replacement for Frenkie de Jong. There was little to criticize about the substitution of the center-back. With a tough tackle, he knocked substitute Ferrán Torres off the ball; twelve minutes before the end, a good long ball from De Vrij ended up at Depay, who immediately got a chance and shot at the keeper.

Daley Blind: 7
After five minutes Blind came in as a replacement for the injured Nathan Aké. His defensive actions have had varying degrees of success. Shortly after his entrance, he let himself be tricked by Morata; immediately before half time he unsuccessfully stepped towards Héctor Bellerín, after which a dangerous situation arose. Blind was important in the build-up. With a nice ball over the defense, he found Van de Beek in the penalty area in the first half; not much later he also sent a good pass in the direction of Wijndal. Two minutes before the end of the game, a wonderful pass from Blind, who was then wearing the captain’s armband, ended up at Van de Beek and a shooting opportunity arose from substitute Ryan Babel.

Owen Wijndal: 7.5
The AZ left back played with considerably more confidence than during his debut game against Mexico in September. Wijndal kept the ball well under pressure or found a correct solution and provided assistance to midfield by covering. The way he sent Gerard Moreno into the woods in the opening phase or saw through a ricochet from Álvaro Morata at a potentially dangerous moment was beautiful. His crosses were often inadequate, but it was a cross from Wijndal that led to the 1-1. Also not to be underestimated was the way in which he took the ball before his cross after a good pass from Klaassen.

Georginio Wijnaldum: 7.5
The midfielder who turned thirty on Wednesday, who wore the captain’s armband due to the absence of Virgil van Dijk, stood out with a few successful, long rushes on half of Spain. He thus achieved ground gains for Orange. The ball-steady Wijnaldum was also important from a defensive point of view, such as when he smothered an attack by Spain in the Orange penalty area. The highlight was a nice pass to Wijndal after 25 minutes of play. Wijnaldum was replaced by De Boer during the break.

Davy Klaassen: 7.5
The fact that Orange’s game went a lot smoother in the second half was partly due to Klaassen’s entrance. Ajax’s midfielder came within the lines for Wijnaldum after the break. Aside from an unfortunate moment defensively – he lost sight of Morata in the penalty area – Klaassen was an added value. Its openings, both to Wijndal and Dumfries, were meticulous; prior to the equalizer, for example, he got the ball in a creditable way at Wijndal. Klaassen often played the ball fast forward and that benefited the game of Orange.

Donny van de Beek: 6.5
With Wijnaldum and Frenkie de Jong next to him, Van de Beek has to provide the attacking impulses from midfield. Initially his share in this was too limited. Van de Beek kept the ball well with him, but sometimes also a little too long, instead of recognizing opportunities to free teammates. At the start of the second half, however, he leveled the Orange squad with a convincing shot in the left corner. In the run-up to that goal, it was also Van de Beek who kept the ball well in midfield and served Klaassen. Prior to one of the last chances of the match for Babel, Van de Beek kept the ball well with him.

Frenkie de Jong: 7.5
His first move was unfortunate – a ball lost in midfield in the first minute – but that was no precursor to his performance. De Jong was in great form: he showed himself fiercely in midfield and interfered with the build-up of Spain, played teammates free and always contributed to the build-up, even when he was under pressure. Highlights were his pass to Depay with a movement behind the standing leg, his preparation for a good shooting opportunity from Luuk de Jong after twenty minutes, a good pass on the sidelines to launch Hateboer a little later and a lovely ball over the defense towards the detached Van de Beek, who turned out to be offside.

Steven Berghuis: 5.5
The contribution of Berghuis was mainly that he shifted the game to the left flank with long balls on Wijndal. Some of them were nicely measured and arrived at their destination, but it was nevertheless a limited contribution from the winger. Maybe it’s also because he was skipped by his teammates. Halfway through the match, the captain of Feyenoord was relieved by Calvin Stengs.

Calvin Stengs: 7
Most of the substitute’s actions were happy. For example, it was a good choice to let Wijndal’s cross run ahead of the 1-1, because Van de Beek could pierce the equalizer. A few minutes later, Stengs stood out in a positive way with a good through ball on the right flank on fellow substitute Dumfries. The good balls from Stengs on Dumfries became a pattern, as their interaction remained like a well-oiled machine. Halfway through the second half, he sent the right back away with a sharp pass along the sidelines. It resulted in a great opportunity for Depay. Shortly before the final whistle, Stengs was at the basis of a chance for Luuk de Jong with a good pass to Dumfries, but the striker was not happy.

Luuk de Jong: 5
The Orange striker depends on the supply from the sides, but he did not receive good crosses often. Despite this, De Jong tried to remain involved in the game, especially in the first half: he fell far back to do the defensive work when Depay remained at the front and often interrupted the Spanish build-up by chasing the goalkeeper of Spain. After the break, he was less prominent, although De Jong had a great chance to give the Orange the victory just before the end. After a pass from Dumfries, De Jong did not get the ball well and the opportunity was soon lost.

Memphis Depay: 5
Depay showed glimpses of his qualities, for example by nicely turning away from Koke or cleverly handing the ball to Wijnaldum in minute 27. However, especially in the first half, he also failed to serve teammates, despite the fact that he was in a good position: for example, he did not see Wijndal several times. Depay was not always happy in his passing actions. After the break, Depay had some chances to score and in particular his shot chance after Dumfries preparatory work should have resulted in a goal. However, Depay took too much time and his shot was not good enough.
