Willem van Hanegem cracks in the television program on Sunday business class some critical notes about the Dutch national team and Frank de Boer. The analyst questions the substitution policy of the national coach who has since resigned. Even before the European Championship, Van Hanegem had a bad feeling about the way in which De Boer dealt with the internationals of the Dutch. “He says things that are contradictory,” continues the ex-trainer, who himself acted as an assistant national coach for some time. “Jasper Cillessen, the keeper, is not going, because he is not one hundred percent fit. I believe that. But then he brings in Donyell Malen (against the Czech Republic, ed.), to take him out after an hour. Because Malen supposedly couldn’t play for more than an hour.”
“So he sends one player home and in his eyes the other is still there after three weeks, but he may stay. That is very contradictory, isn’t it?” Van Hanegem wonders.
