It is still unclear whether Arjen Robben will continue to play football. Mark-Jan Fledderus, technical director of FC Groningen, confirms that talks are underway with the 37-year-old captain. However, he lives in uncertainty, as Robben himself is not yet out. It is also unclear when the veteran will make a decision about his sporting future.

Robben returned from his football retirement last year with a contract with FC Groningen. Due to injuries, however, he did not get further than seven games. Fledderus is in talks with Robben about a collaboration for next season, but has no definitive answer yet. “Arjen went away alone a week or two or three ago with Bernadien (his wife, ed.) to think about it carefully,” said Fledderus at an anniversary show that the club made in collaboration with RTV North on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of FC Groningen.

Robben is currently weighing the pros and cons. “On the one hand, he really wants to play football, you can tell by everything, and he really wants to play in a full stadium. But on the other hand, he is of course a day older and there are some aches in the body. He’s had a very tough year, of course. That’s the struggle there is, I think,” said Fledderus, who would not blame Robben if he decides to stop. “We are already very grateful to him for doing this in the first place.”
