SC Cambuur pushed PEC Zwolle more firmly into last place in the Eredivisie on Saturday evening. The troubled Art Langeler team lost 1-2 in front of its own audience. The loss against Cambuur is extra hard for PEC because competitor Sparta Rotterdam surprisingly won 0-3 at Willem II earlier in the evening. For PEC it was already the tenth loss in twelve matches.

Bram van Polen was not happy afterwards. The captain had been shown a yellow card in injury time after he pushed Robin Maulun in the throat during a free kick for the visitors. He appeared in front of the camera of ESPN and was still clearly irritated. “Shall we talk about that?” suggested reporter Milan van Dongen. Van Polen: “I’m not even going to talk about that. That ref… god damn it, I’m not even going to talk about it. Never mind, yo. That whine goes down immediately.”

PEC, which has been playing continuously at the highest level since 2012, seemed to have started the way up. The last few weeks were won against Heracles Almelo (1-0) and De Graafschap (TOTO KNVB Cup, 4-1) and only narrowly lost 3-2 to AZ. Cambuur, however, was too strong. “Cambuur was definitely better on the ball. That’s just their strength. But I don’t think they created much. If you are going to check the chances against each other, then I think we are not inferior to Cambuur,” said Van Polen.

The gap between PEC and Fortuna Sittard, which is now penultimate, is five points. The Limburgers play at home against PSV on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 pm. “How do you prevent negative sentiment? Getting points. That is the only remedy,” emphasized Van Polen. “We can always ask if the supporters will stand behind us, but in the end you will have to take points.”
