Borussia Dortmund suffered their second league defeat of the season on Saturday. Trainer Marco Rose saw how his players went down against his former employer Borussia Mönchengladbach: 1-0. The winning goal came a few minutes before Borussia Dortmund had to continue with ten men. Donyell Malen was in the base with those Borus, where Erling Braut Haaland and Marco Reus were missing due to injuries.
The teams of Adi Hütter and Rose neutralized each other in most of the first half. From a football technical point of view, it was not a spectacle in the first half, although there was a battle for every ball and every meter. After 37 minutes, the somewhat lucky opening goal of that Fohlen: after a one-two between Matthias Ginter and Denis Zakaria, the ball came through Jude Bellingham in the penalty area and the ball ended in the left corner behind goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Dortmund, with Malen and Youssoufa Moukoko in the attack, could do nothing against that.
A few minutes later, Rose’s team also had to continue with ten men. Mahmoud Dahoud came late in midfield in a duel with Joseph Scally and received his second yellow card of the game. Despite the undernumber situation, Rose opted for an attacking substitution after the break: the trainer pulled Marin Pongracic off the side and brought Thorgan Hazard inside the lines. It was the home team that started the second half better and soon had a view of the 2-0. Kobel turned a shot by Jonas Hofmann and a shot by Luca Netz was converted into a corner by Thomas Meunier in time.
Borussia Mönchengladbach kept looking for a liberating second goal, while Dortmund were powerless to create big chances. For Malen, who is still waiting for his first goal after 486 minutes, the game was over after 82 minutes: the Dutchman was replaced by Reinier. Dortmund were still close to the equalizer in extra time. Yann Sommer only half processed a ball from Nico Schulz, after which Hazard headed the ball over the goal from close range. An anything but creative Borussia Dortmund ended the game without a single bet on goal.
