Tahith Chong, who is loaned out to Birmingham City, will return to Manchester United early, the latter club announced through official channels on Wednesday afternoon. The midfielder is struggling with a groin injury and was forced to undergo surgery. Chong, who has made himself heard via Instagram, is expected to be out of circulation for four to five months.

The Manchester United mercenary suffered a groin injury during training on Friday at Wast Hills Training Ground, the training complex of Birmingham. A subsequent scan revealed the extent of the injury. “Tahith has undergone surgery to repair a torn thigh tendon,” said Manchester United. “The surgery went well and he will return to Manchester United to complete an expected four to five month rehabilitation.”

Birmingham City has reacted with disappointment to the news about the midfielder. “It seemed like something very small when it happened,” manager Lee Bowyer said in a comment on the website. “There was no one around him and we never thought for a moment that it could be a serious injury. It’s a huge loss, everyone knows what he’s been like since he’s been here. He’s a good player for us But the most important thing for Tahith now is that he recovers well and gets some rest. We are going to miss him.”

“As a player, it hurts to tell you this, but unfortunately this is life and this is football,” Chong said on Instagram. “I want to thank everyone at Birmingham City for everything they have done for me over the past few months. The players, staff and everyone involved have made me feel welcome from day one, something I will not forget.” Chong was successively leased by United to Werder Bremen and Club Brugge, after which the English superpower stored him at Birmingham last summer. In total, he made thirteen appearances for the Championship team.
