Suriname has been eliminated in the first round of the qualifying phase in the CONCACAF zone for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The team of national coach Dean Gorré had to beat Canada to reach the next round, but just got a beating from les Rouges. The game in the Toyota Park in Bridgeview, American, ended in 4-0. Canada takes the top spot in Group B with twelve points from four matches and a goal difference of +26 and has to deal with Haiti in the next round in two matches.

Canada got away well after twelve minutes when a shot by Sheraldo Becker hit the bottom of the bar hard and failed to cross the goal line. Suriname started well and fierce, although they also got away well when Warner Hahn turned a bet from Jonathan David and Richie Laryea’s rebound hit the post. In the last twenty meters before the break, Canada showed itself more and after 37 minutes the 1-0 fell. Alphonso Davies entered the penalty area on the left after a pass from David and shot the ball low through Hahn’s legs: 1-0.

Ridgeciano Haps was lucky that he made it to the halftime signal. The defender already had a yellow card in his pocket when he made a foul on Laryea from behind just before half time. After the break, Diego Biseswar made way for Florian Jozefzoon and Suriname hoped to turn things around. However, Canada won the game from minute 59. After a lovely pass from Davies, David shot the ball low into the left corner: 2-0. A few minutes later, Gorré chose to field Damil Dankerlui, Ivenzo Comvalius and Mitchell te Vrede.

Suriname had a chance at 2-1 via Te Vrede twenty minutes before the end, but he overshot after preparatory work by Becker. Canada struck for a third time three minutes later. Davies was unstoppable on his way to Hahn’s goal, but gave up to David when he passed two men: 3-0. In minute 76 the 4-0 followed from eleven meters: Hahn took down Lucas Cavallini and David completed his hat-trick from the spot. Canada wanted more, but Suriname was spared a wider defeat.

Suirname ends the group stage with nine points from four matches, after victories over the Cayman Islands (3-0), Aruba (0-6) and Bermuda (6-0) in the first three group matches. Canada will play a double match against one of five other group winners, Haiti, on June 12 and 17 as group winners. The winners of those duels will face the top countries of the CONCACAF zone in the final round in an entire competition: Mexico, United States, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Honduras. The best three go to Qatar, the number four still plays an intercontinental play-off.

Suriname setup: hahn; Leerdam, Donk, Pinas, Haps; Malone, Koolwijk, Chery, Biseswar; Becker and Hasselbaink. Invaders: Jozefzoon, Te Vrede, Comvalius, Dankerlui.
