The national team of Suriname has started the Gold Cup tournament with a defeat. The team of national coach Dean Gorré went down against Jamaica on Monday evening local time. The game at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando ended in 2-0. The Gold Cup is a tournament for countries from North and Central America and the Caribbean. Suriname will play its second group match against Costa Rica on July 16.

In Suriname’s first Gold Cup match, Gorré opted for a base team in which only Gleofilo Vlijter never played in the Eredivisie. The other basic forces, Warner Hahn, Damil Dankerlui, Sean Klaiber, Dion Malone, Ridgeciano Haps, Ryan Donk, Kelvin Leerdam, Diego Biseswar, Florian Jozefzoon and Sheraldo Becker, played together hundreds of matches at the highest level in the Netherlands.

Jamaica took the lead after six minutes. The Reggae Boyz were unable to get rid of the ball around Suriname’s penalty area and eventually the fine attack ended with a low shot by Shamar Nicholson in the left corner behind Hahn: 1-0. Vlijter had a great chance to equalize a minute later, after a good pass from Haps, but his effort bounced just wide. Jamaica doubled the advantage after 25 minutes: Hahn had no chance on a wonderful volley from Bobby Reid in the left corner.

Suriname started the second half fanatically, but failed to bring the tension back into the game. Only three out of ten en the National goalkeeper Andre Blake had to come into action. Six of Jamaica’s seven attempts, on the other hand, were between the posts. Ryan Koolwijk, Nigel Hasselbaink and Ivenzo Comvalius made their appearance in the second half as substitutes.

The Gorré team will play at the same stadium on Friday evening against Costa Rica, which started the tournament with a 3-1 win over Guadeloupe. The numbers one and two from each of the four groups will qualify for the quarter-finals. Qatar, host of the 2022 World Cup, is part of Group D with Honduras, Panama and Grenada.
