Suriname has been eliminated from the Gold Cup after two games, the championship for countries from the Caribbean and Central and North America. Nationality also lost his second group match in the night from Friday to Saturday, in which Costa Rica was too strong 1-2 in the Orlando City Stadium. Because Jamaica won against Guadeloupe with the same numbers, Suriname can no longer finish in the best two in Group C with one game to play.

The team of national coach Dean Gorré made its debut last week with a 2-0 loss against Jamaica at the Gold Cup. The assignment against Costa Rica, which won its first game 3-1 against Guadeloupe, was therefore clear: to win. Suriname got off to a strong start against Costa Rica, which, by the way, did get the first opportunities. A shot from Francisco Calvo just sailed past Warner Hahn’s goal, while Luis Díaz failed to deliver a shot on target in a promising position. With 39 minutes on the clock, Suriname showed itself with the biggest chance of the match until then.

Gleofilo Vlijter sent Sheraldo Becker into the depths, but the Union Berlin winger saw his bet turned by former AZ goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado. In the injury time of the first half, a free kick by Florian Jozefzoon went just wide. Shortly after the break Suriname took the lead. Damil Dankerlui came free on the right side of the penalty area and brought in the ball, where Vlijter received the leather. The Beitar Jerusalem striker turned away and shot Suriname’s first goal at the Gold Cup against the ropes.

Not long after, however, things went completely wrong for Suriname. After 56 minutes, Rónald Matarrita delivered the ball in front of the goal, where Joel Campbell crawled in front of Ryan Donk and headed in the equalizer. Barely a minute later, Costa Rica scored again. Hahn was able to stop Campbell’s shot, but had no chance when the onrushing Celso Borges then got the ball for the shot. Suriname emphatically looked for the equalizer in the final phase and remained within an attainable margin, because Borges and Campbell failed to extend Costa Rica’s lead.

After a red card for Calvo after a striking move to Donk, Suriname was able to launch a final offensive in search of the equalizer, after Kelvin Leerdam and substitute Ivenzo Comvalius had already had opportunities. The closest was Comvalius in stoppage time, but his effort hit the post. As a result, Suriname also remained without points in its second Gold Cup game. In front of Nationality in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, another match for the emperor’s beard against Guadeloupe awaits, in which the third place in the group is at stake.

Suriname setup: Hahn, Klaiber (Koolwijk), Malone, Donk, Haps; Dankerlui (Donald), Leerdam, Biseswar; Jozefzoon (Comvalius), Vlijter, Becker (Hasselbaink)
