UEFA has come to the short end in its lingering conflict with the three remaining Super League founders. The European Football Association wants to impose sanctions on Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus, but is called back by the Spanish court. The three clubs could claim huge damages if UEFA continues its disciplinary action.

The announcement of the closed Super League was completely wrong with UEFA, which felt sidelined. Nine of the twelve founders quickly bonded and withdrew, but Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus are still officially part of the Super League. UEFA is furious that the three clubs are refusing to distance themselves from the elite competition and announced measures.

There were threats to exclude Barça, Real and Juve from European football for two years. However, that has been brushed aside by the Spanish court. According to judge Manuel Ruiz de Lara, the clubs have the legal right to set up a separate league. UEFA has been told that the disciplinary investigation into the three top European clubs should be suspended and that the clubs should not be excluded from European football.

The Daily Mail added that Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus could recover 20 percent of their lost Champions League revenues in the event of UEFA sanctions. Juventus president Andrea Agnelli showed last week that he is not afraid of UEFA. “We are not afraid of threats and we are confident that our legal action will lead to satisfactory results, but the real success would be if we return to dialogue,” said Agnelli.
