Shurandy Sambo appears to have suffered a serious knee injury last week, it knows Eindhovens Dagblad to report. The 19-year-old fullback is feared to have torn his anterior cruciate ligament, an injury that will take six to nine months in rehabilitation. The serious knee injury comes at a time when Sambo should have just made a decision about his near future.

Sambo is still fixed at PSV until mid-2022 and the people of Eindhoven would like to bind him for two or three years longer. It Eindhovens Dagblad writes that the wing defender was ‘inclined’ to go into this, although there was explicit interest from Sassuolo. According to the newspaper, the Serie A club was planning to report to PSV on Saturday with a ‘firm offer’. Sassuolo had wanted to pay one million euros for Sambo’s contract, which is still running until mid-2022.

However, Sassuolo has put the case ‘on hold’ due to Sambo’s injury and is awaiting the medical examination. Should Sambo indeed be out of circulation for six to nine months, he will have to reconsider his options. The youth international predicted last month that the chances of playing time at PSV would increase for him due to the departure of Denzel Dumfries. In an interview with ESPN Sambo was asked if he is ‘kind of the same type’ as Dumfries. “Just coming up,” replied the young man. “I try to add more to that with technique. I certainly try to learn the walking ability from him.”

Sambo made his debut in the first team in the last league match of last season. He was allowed to come in on a visit to FC Utrecht (1-1) fourteen minutes before time. In the Kitchen Champion Division, Sambo played 35 games for Jong PSV last season, in which he scored six goals and provided five assists. PSV announced last Friday that the right back can train with Roger Schmidt’s A-selection.
