Sergio Aguero’s transfer to Barcelona has provided the striker with anything but an improved annual salary. The Argentinian earned an annual salary of 23 million euros gross per year at Manchester City, but has to settle for considerably less with the Spanish superpower. Mundo Deportivo reports Wednesday that Aguero earns an annual salary of 6 million euros at Barcelona, with which the 33-year-old attacker surrenders 17 million euros. The difference is mainly in the age and financial situation of Barcelona.

From the moment Barcelona contacted Aguero, it was made clear to the striker that the financial situation would not allow for a top salary. Barcelona is struggling with a huge debt. Aguero then had the opportunity to earn more at Juventus, among others, but preferred Barcelona, where he hopes to play together with Lionel Messi next season. The fact that Aguero was able to earn a higher annual salary at Juventus has to do with the Italian tax system, which means that foreign players can look forward to a higher income.

The contract details at Barcelona do have a number of parentheses, as Aguero’s salary could be significantly boosted if the attack leader manages to grab some prizes. The number of matches played can also increase the salary considerably. For Agüero who turned 33 on Wednesday, it is therefore especially important to stay fit and prove his value for the team. It remains to be seen whether the prize hunt will be launched together with Messi. The club legend has yet to decide on his future and could leave the Camp Nou next summer, although the chances of that happening are not considered high in Spain.

Remarkably enough, Agüero indicated during his presentation on Monday that he had not yet spoken with Ronald Koeman. It is still not clear whether Koeman will stay on as coach of Barcelona next season, as Joan Laporta prefers a new coach. “I have nothing to do with that; it’s none of my business. The club will make the best decision and I have no right to say anything about that. I have not yet spoken to Koeman,” said Aguero, who also did not want to say anything about a possible return of Pep Guardiola.
