If it is up to Paul Robinson, Steven Bergwijn will turn down all transfer rumors this summer to make his stay at Tottenham Hotspur a success. The former goalkeeper of the Spurs believes the resignation of manager José Mourinho could positively influence the development of the forward, who last kicked off a Premier League game in February. Bergwijn was out of the picture under Mourinho and was even not included in the match selection for a few matches.

Bergwijn was one of the many players who fell out of favor under Mourinho. In addition to the Dutchman, Danny Rose, Harry Winks, Serge Aurier and Gareth Bale were also ignored at various times by the Portuguese coach. “It’s a clean slate for all players,” Robinson points out The Athletic on the dismissal of Mourinho. “This team is very strong and Steven is a perfect part of it. I suspect we will get to see the best of him.”

Mourinho did not make Bergwijn into the match selection for the matches against Newcastle United, Manchester United and Everton and was dismissed by Tottenham not much later. His temporary successor Ryan Mason granted Bergwijn a minute of playing time in the lost EFL Cup final against Manchester City (1-0 loss) last Sunday. “He has a great future at Tottenham,” Robinson continues. “He hasn’t performed as well as he could have done this season, but he’s still a top young player.”

Tottenham is now working hard on a definitive successor for Mourinho. According to the current number seven of the Premier League, the new trainer must be ‘progressive and offensive’, must have a ‘preference for football from possession’ and above all must ‘fit within the club culture’. Mauricio Pochettino’s time, between 2014 and 2019, serves as a blueprint for this. Erik ten Hag’s name is emphatically mentioned in North London. “The manager who will come in the summer has to solve the problems in the defense. The balance in the forefront is good.”
