The preparation for the new season is far from smooth for Steven Berghuis. According to Football International with a 'minor injury' and therefore had to miss the practice match against PEC Zwolle (0-1 defeat).

It is not known what the exact injury is. It is clear that it may take some time before the veteran (32) can think about playing matches again.

“Steven Berghuis occasionally trains with Ajax and works half days,” Van Duijn writes on X. “It is impossible to say when he will be fit again.”

Berghuis is experiencing problems with his injury. Despite this, the right winger is training with the group, but he is not participating in all exercises.

“To what extent Berghuis can work up to match minutes depends on how much he continues to recover,” writes Van Duijn. Berghuis will have to miss the match against Sint-Truiden on 9 July in any case.

Ajax will then face Rangers FC (July 13) and Al-Wasl (July 18), before concluding their friendly campaign against Olympiacos (July 19). Those matches currently do not seem feasible for Berghuis.

Berghuis wants to return to the field as soon as possible, but must remain patient. On 25 July and 1 August, Ajax will play against Vojvodina in the second preliminary round of the Europa League. Coach Francesco Farioli has a lot of confidence in him in any case.

Last season, Berghuis also struggled with frequent injuries. Shortly after recovering from a knee injury, he suffered a back injury. Only in the last three games of the season could then-trainer John van 't Schip cautiously call on him again.

Future

It is expected that Berghuis, who is contracted to Amsterdam until mid-2025, will be able to play for Ajax for a maximum of one more season. VI knows for sure: “Berghuis, who is starting his last season in Amsterdam, wants to return to the field as soon as possible, but must therefore be patient.”

A contract extension is ruled out in that case, which should come as no surprise given his position in the salary house of the financially struggling Ajax. The technician was already cautiously linked to a departure to Besiktas, where he can work together with trainer Giovanni van Bronckhorst again. The two met earlier at Feyenoord.
