Maurice Steijn used the international break to go on holiday to Ibiza, Spain for a few days. He met fellow trainer Arne Slot at the airport, he says prior to the FC Twente – Ajax match on Sunday afternoon. Both managers were on their way to the island and it turned out they were on the same plane. In front of the camera ESPN the Ajax coach discusses the incident. “That was hilarious.”

“We didn’t know about each other,” says Steijn. “Those people’s jaws dropped. We were just chatting, also about the fact that they had already lost four points (in the Eredivisie, ed.). While we were talking, we were ordered to get on the plane, because they wanted to leave. Then we walked onto the plane, we were the last. We didn’t sit next to each other, but we both sat at the end of the plane. That was hilarious.”

The trainer also discussed the stories about himself and director of football affairs Sven Mislintat. According to Mike Verweij, Steijn and the director were of The Telegraph at one point not speaking to each other for two weeks. “It is logical in a hectic period that there are sometimes differences between one another td and a trainer. You also both have slightly different interests. A trainer is there for the short term, he wants results quickly.”

“The td looks at the long term,” Steijn continues. “And that sometimes causes tension. But as I said this week, he has been on holiday, the rest of the staff has been away for a few days. And from Thursday we picked up the thread again. Enough has already been said and written about it. I now want to focus on what’s next.”
